| Wearable Tech Bracelet Brings You Smartphone Notifications Posted: 15 Jun 2013 08:23 PM PDT    Wearable tech fashion is dominating the headlines, with excitement brewing over Google Glass and potential smart watches by Apple and Samsung Tech giants aside, smaller companies are also entering the wearable tech space, including Embrace+, which alerts wearers to smartphone notifications "through a combination of visual and tactile cues." What's more, this happens all while the mobile device remains inside a purse or pocket. "Through a simple set-up of some basic parameters on the smartphone you already have, the Embrace+ will show you what you want, and when you want to know it," according to the company's Kickstarter page. "What it shows, how it displays your information and how frequently you see the information is completely up to you." Read more... In addition to fanfare surrounding the much-hyped console, however, there were also several mobile-game announcements and launches this week: A popular Facebook game arrived on mobile, while a well-known social-gaming company launched an action-packed MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena). | Huge Earth-Passing Asteroid an 'Entirely New Beast' Posted: 15 Jun 2013 05:58 PM PDT  A big asteroid that flew past Earth last month belongs to a new category of space rock, scientists say. Asteroid 1998 QE2 and its moon sailed within 3.6 million miles (5.8 million kilometers) of Earth on May 31, making their closest approach to our planet for at least the next two centuries. New radar images captured by the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico are revealing just how unique this binary asteroid is, researchers say. "Asteroid QE2 is dark, red, and primitive — that is, it hasn't been heated or melted as much as other asteroids," Arecibo's Ellen Howell said in a statement. "QE2 is nothing like any asteroid we've visited with a spacecraft, or plan to, or that we have meteorites from. It's an entirely new beast in the menagerie of asteroids near Earth." Read more... |

There are more Web developer jobs than candidates, and it takes months — not years — to climb the career ladder James Somers, a developer, writes in a recent essay: "I have a friend who decided, part way into his second year of law school, to start coding. Two months later he was enrolled in Hacker School in New York, and three months later he was working as an intern at a consultancy that helps build websites for startups. Facebook (finally) rolled out hashtag support, and Apple debuted the next "biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the iPhone" since the last "biggest thing to happen to the iPhone since the iPhone": the bright new iOS 7. And of course our readers had much to say about it. Announced at WWDC, iOS 7 drew a lot of criticism for its lighter color scheme, even inspiring a Tumblr account, "Jony Ive Redesigns Things," which mostly paints Apple's vice president of industrial design to be a Lisa Frank for 2013 Some commenters said iOS 7's shiny design — which moves away from much of the skeuomorphic look that Steve Jobs prided himself on for setting Apple apart from other mobile operating systems — is an insult to Jobs' vision and suggested that since Jobs' passing, Apple's been losing its lead in innovation against Microsoft, Android and other companies. | Survey: Why Wouldn't You Want Google Glass? Posted: 15 Jun 2013 12:15 PM PDT  While some people can't wait to get their hands on Google Glass (myself included), many have no interest in acquiring Google's not-yet-released wearable technology device. The potential for distraction and cost were the two most-cited reasons against Google Glass in a recent survey conducted by Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism. Interestingly, the study found that awareness of Google Glass was high: Of the 1,210 mobile device owners between the ages 49 to 59 included, more than half said they had heard of Google Glass. | AT&T Enables Government Emergency Alerts For iPhone Users Posted: 15 Jun 2013 11:32 AM PDT  AT&T is rolling out a software update for iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and — in certain areas — iPhone 4 handsets, enabling Wireless Emergency Alerts. In a blog post announcing the software update, the carrier explains:

| 25 Creepy Paintings of Renaissance Babies Posted: 15 Jun 2013 11:03 AM PDT  The Renaissance was a time in our history characterized by major cultural and scientific innovation. Aided by great thinkers such as Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo, it brought about the appreciation of beauty and the desire to create it. For that, we give them some serious props. But in that noble quest, one thing missed the mark — the ability to paint a cute, snuggly, human-like baby. It's a question that still puzzles museum goers and art lovers today: As for why Renaissance melodies are so easy to sing, we'll have to save that for another post. | Google Launches Balloons to Bring the Internet to Remote Regions Posted: 15 Jun 2013 09:52 AM PDT  Google is launching huge balloons to bring the Internet to remote and difficult terrain — think mountain ranges, archipelagos and jungles — beginning with New Zealand. Last week, Google launched 30 Internet-enabling balloons in the Canterbury region of New Zealand, with plans to launch 20 more. The balloons, which resemble white, effervescent jellyfish, use a combination of wind, solar power and "complex algorithms" to stay in a fixed part of the sky, says project leader Mike Cassidy. The balloons communicate with antennas placed on the ground tens of thousands of feet below to provide Internet access to those areas. Read more... Free to download, the app only works for those who has subscribed to Microsoft Office 365 (at a cost of about $10 a month of $100 a year), and for now there’s only an iPhone version — iPad users still only get Office web apps via the browser.
Using Office for iPhone you can edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents right on your phone’s screen, andyou can also create new Word and Excel documents on the fly.
