RoboRoach Lets You Control an Insect's Mind With an App Posted: 11 Jun 2013 08:26 PM PDT Remember in high school, in your bio lab, when you had to dissect that fetal pig? You learned all about physiological systems and their processes. And remember in chemistry, when your professor made a liquid nitrogen bomb to send a trashcan rocketing into the sky? You learned what happens when liquid nitrogen is boiled in a sealed container and turns into a gas Now, recall your neuroscience class, when you used Bluetooth-operated cyborg cockroaches to learn about brain spikes and adaptation. No? Well, probably because that hasn't happened — yet. Brought to you by the minds behind Backyard Brains, a neurological education and outreach company, the first commercially available cyborgs are, in fact, here for the general public. They landed on Kickstarter Monday, and they're wooing support from Internet backers worldwide Read more... More about Apps, Iphone, Technology, Tech, and Gadgets |

Pro Baseball Player Suspended Indefinitely After Twitter Rant Posted: 11 Jun 2013 07:28 PM PDT One day after he went on a lengthy Twitter rant, the Chicago Cubs have suspended Ian Stewart indefinitely Stewart was a first-round pick in the 2003 MLB draft. In his Monday tweet rampage, the baseball player lamented being relegated to the minor leagues, criticized Cubs manager Dale Sveum and hinted that the team should release him from his contract — in which case they'd still be obligated to pay his salary When a fan suggested that he simply quit, Stewart replied with this gem: More about Mlb, Entertainment, and Sports |
Lefties vs. Righties: It's All in Your Head Posted: 11 Jun 2013 06:59 PM PDT Whether you're right-handed or left-handed, you've probably stopped noticing how often you rely on your dominant hand. But have you ever stopped to wonder why you only eat with your left or doodle with your right?
SciShow aims to answer that question in today's video titled, "Why Are There Righties & Lefties?" According to host Hank Green, while there is an enormous divide between righties and lefties (90% of humans versus 10% of humans, roughly), hand dominance is unique to humans among primates And while dogs and cats tend to favor a paw, he adds, the split between righties and lefties is just about even. So why are humans different in this respect? Blame the brain hemisphere. Watch the video above to find out. Read more... More about Videos, Science, Watercooler, Health Fitness, and Scishow |

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 05:59 PM PDT If you're an artist, your sketchbook probably looks pretty standard. But what if you're an "anthropomorphist architect?" Or an elephant?
In this comic, Grant Snider of Incidental Comics illustrates sketchbooks for a variety of professions, but somewhere between marine biologist and "frustrated origamist," things get a little strange. Which is your favorite? You can purchase Snider's comics as prints through his poster shop.

Did Apple Just Ally With Microsoft Against Google? Posted: 11 Jun 2013 05:40 PM PDT It was one of those blink-and-you-miss-it moments. In Monday's WWDC keynote, Apple executive Eddy Cue was running through the new iOS 7 version of Siri, when he happened to mention Siri's default search function would be powered by Bing, not Google That means the first default search engine on Apple's voice assistant, baked into 600 million iPhones, will be brought to you by Microsoft. It's a huge win for the giant of Redmond, which has long been hunting for more fronts to open up on Google in the search wars. "We are excited to work with Apple to deliver Bing to Siri users this fall," Microsoft VP for Bing Derrick Connell said in a statement Read more... More about Microsoft, Apple, Siri, Bing, and Tech |

'KU Boobs' Twitter Account Embroiled in College Controversy Posted: 11 Jun 2013 04:40 PM PDT The Kansas University variety, it seems, may have just become an endangered species of boob Confused? Here's some background. There is a certain Twitter account called @KUboobs. It does all it can to support Kansas Jayhawks sports (as well as, reportedly, breast cancer awareness) by posting user-submitted photos of bosomy women decked out in KU gear Yes, it's random, and possibly sexist. But it's also popular; the account has accumulated more than 56,000 followers since launching last year. The official @KUAthletics account, for comparison, has 63,000 followers But the fun may be over, after the account tweeted that it had been hit with a cease-and-desist letter by the university threatening to have it shut down for trademark infringement Read more... Facebook, Microsoft Join Google in Government Transparency Request Posted: 11 Jun 2013 04:02 PM PDT Following Google's lead, on Tuesday both Microsoft and Facebook released statements requesting the U.S. government's permission to publish data and be more transparent about surveillance. Earlier Tuesday, after last week's revelations about the NSA surveillance program PRISM, Google published a letter it sent to Attorney Genral Eric Holder. In the letter, the search giant asked permission to publish more data about the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) requests that it has received over the years to lift the veil of secrecy surrounding the program

NASA Rover Opportunity Makes Big Discovery, Keeps on Truckin' Posted: 11 Jun 2013 03:28 PM PDT NASA's 9-year-old Mars rover Opportunity is on the move again after making a momentous discovery on the Red Planet and defying the limitations of Father Time. Opportunity — which is nearing its 10th anniversary and has spent the last 20 months working in Cape York (trek below), a raised segment of the Endeavour Crater's western rim — in May inspected a pale rock, called "Esperance" on Matijevic Hill. According to preliminary interpretation, Oppy discovered clay-mineral content formed via intensive alteration by water. The findings, per scientists, suggest that neutral-pH water might have once flowed through the area. Read more... More about Space, Nasa, Opportunity, Rocks, and Mars |
iOS 7 Updates Look a Little Too Familiar to Some Apple Developers Posted: 11 Jun 2013 03:10 PM PDT Stephen Orth wondered why Apple didn't use the metadata in photos to better organize pictures in the iPhoto app so, last September, he started developing an app of his own in his spare time to do just that. The result was Photowerks, a 99-cent iPhone app released last month, which lets users sort their photos by date and location. "I always thought it sounded strange that Apple didn't do that in its photo app," Orth told Mashable in an interview. "I figured it was just a matter of time before they did do it."
As it turned out, it was less than a month before Apple did just that. During the keynote event at its Worldwide Developers Conference on Monday, Apple announced a new option for iPhoto called Moments that automatically organizes a user's photos and videos by — you guessed it — date and location. Lonely Island on New 'Wack Album:' Watch Your Back, Rihanna Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:52 PM PDT Comedic rap trio The Lonely Island — whose T-Pain-assisted track "I'm on a Boat" earned a Grammy nod — released a third studio album TuesdayThe Wack Album features funny collaborations with Adam Levine, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Solange Knowles, Robyn and Billie Joe Armstrong. "Watch your back, Rihanna," Andy Samberg says in this quirky video interview with Mashable. Samberg cracked the joke when asked whether Billboard's addition of YouTube views to the way it ranks top songs would be an advantage for The Lonely Island. But it's not as though the group needs any advantage. The Lonely Island — whose Justin Timberlake-infused tune "Dick in a Box" won an Emmy — has the five highest-selling songs ever on Billboard's Comedy Digital Songs Chart. And The Wack Album's lead single "YOLO" (below) debuted at number 60 on the Hot 100 singles chart. The song also claimed the top spot on iTunes's Top 10 Comedy Songs charts when it was released in January Read more... More about Music, Entertainment, Comedy, Mashable Video, and The Lonely Island |
Zuckerberg Offers Another PRISM Denial Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:30 PM PDT Facebook has nothing to do with PRISM. That's what Mark Zuckerberg said for a second time on Tuesday At Facebook's annual shareholder meeting, the company's founder and CEO said pretty much what he said last week.
"We don’t work directly with the NSA, or with any other program," he said. "Nor do we proactively give user information to anyone, nor has anyone approached us to do that." Zuckerberg added that no agency has "direct access" to Facebook's servers. But that doesn't necessarily close the book on PRISM, the secret NSA program that allegedly allows the NSA to wiretap the communications of Internet companies' foreign users. Read more... Apple Customers' Verdict on New Products: A Mixed Bag Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:27 PM PDT Apple fans were underwhelmed by the latest product updates revealed on Monday, with most of them more curious about when the next iPhone will launch Consumers who gathered outside the flagship Apple Store in New York City on Tuesday said they were unimpressed with the company's announcements from the day before at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, although the reaction from Apple customers in San Francisco was more enthusiastic.
"Everything was relatively incremental," said 26-year-old Tim Schultz, who was traveling to New York from Orlando, Fla. "iOS 7 has some interesting new graphics and I'm sure it will be an improvement, but it's more of the same. There hasn't been any groundbreaking innovation from Apple in the past year or so, especially in terms of hardware." Read more... More about Apple, Wwdc, Tech, Apps Software, and Mobile |

Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:16 PM PDT With iOS 7, Apple is giving Siri a big revamp. Not only is the iPhone's voice assistant getting an optional male persona, but it's also getting some enhanced abilities, including better integration with Twitter. The gang at TechSmartt (who also did a very thorough Galaxy S4 drop test) got their hands on the developer beta of iOS 7 and took the upgraded Siri for a spin.
Right away you can see Jony Ive's translucent design when Siri appears, with the out-of-focus colors hinting at the apps in the background. The list of potential commands Siri suggests at launch are given new prominence, and now float in from the bottom, part of the trend toward more animation in iOS 7. Read more... Posted: 11 Jun 2013 02:05 PM PDT For Waze, mapping software proved to be a road of riches. The company's nine-year journey culminated on Tuesday, when Google agreed to pay a reported $1.03 billion to acquire the company. That price may have been inflated by a bidding war among Google, Facebook and Apple, according to rumors.
Waze claims around 45 million users, but there's a good chance you're unfamiliar with the company and its app. If you're wondering why the Israeli firm became such a hot property of late, here are a few theories: 1. There aren't that many mapping software companies. Waze didn't have any real competitors. "I'm usually in sectors where there are 14,000 startups," says Scott Rafer, CEO of Lumatic, which provides mapping software for walkers, not drivers. "But in maps, you can't do it lean." Read more... Stunna Shades With LED Lights Groove to the Music Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:10 PM PDT Listen up, party people: Get ready to ditch your old stunna shades and slap on a pair of high-tech upgrades. A Texas-based Kickstarter campaign is promoting DropShades, audio-responsive glasses that dance to the beat of music via sound-reactive technology. The rave accessories tap a tiny microphone connected to a signal processor to translate incoming sounds across six horizontal bars and LED lights.
Powered by AAA batteries, the glasses reportedly groove for six hours straight. "The effect is an audio responsive light show for everyone to enjoy," explain the creators. At time of writing, DropShades had raised more than $30,000, doubling its first stretch goal of $15,000. Read more... More about Music, Technology, Kickstarter, Glasses, and Newsy |
Facebook Execs Grilled at First Shareholder Meeting Posted: 11 Jun 2013 01:07 PM PDT "My question is about the IPO," a Facebook investor said midway through the company's first shareholder meeting. "I think it was a disaster." The comment was just one of several investor criticisms directed towards Facebook's executive team about the company's initial public offering last May and the stock's poor performance in the year since. One shareholder said he had invested "blindly" because his family was a "fan" of Facebook's CEO and cofounder Mark Zuckerberg; now, he's "under water." Another asked if Facebook has "any strategy to create a new product to boost the price per share in the near future." Read more... This College Student Is the King of Snapchat PR Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:48 PM PDT Until recently, Matthew Hanson had been the media point of contact for Snapchat, Inc. Seems like a pretty good gig for someone who only recently received a degree in pubic relations, right? The only problem: He doesn't actually work for the company. During the fall 2012 semester, Hanson was enrolled in "Strategic Writing for Public Relations" at the University of Southern California. For the course's final project, the 21-year-old had to create an online newsroom for a company or product of his choice. He picked Snapchat, the popular mobile app that lets users share videos and photos that disappear within seconds of being viewed. Read more... Has Technology Killed Cursive Handwriting? Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:31 PM PDT Think back to the last time you wrote in cursive — you know, that fancy penmanship you may have learned way back in grade school, complete with elegant loops, curls and flourishes. These days, with our fingers tapping on QWERTY keyboards, Evernote taking the place of sticky notes and tablets replacing paper notebooks, a question arises: Has the rise of technology led to the fall of cursive handwriting? In the United States, somewhere around the third grade, cursive handwriting instruction has long been a sort of milestone, or right of passage. But in recent years, the nation's Common Core State Standards — which at least 45 states and the District of Columbia, have voluntarily adopted — took out the requirement for cursive instruction in K through 12 schools. It has stirred quite the debate, since it's up to each individual state to decide whether cursive is important enough to teach its own students. In recent months, North Carolina legislators approved a bill to require its students to learn cursive in elementary school, Read more... Designer Remakes NSA's 'Hideous' PRISM Slideshow Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:28 PM PDT Pretty much everyone has an opinion about PRISM. But Paris-based presentation designer Emiland De Cubber is less concerned about privacy versus security debate — instead, he's worried about the NSA's lack of PowerPoint know-how "Dear NSA," he writes in the presentation. "You can do whatever you want with my data. But not with my eyes. Those slides are hideous."
De Cubber redesigned the NSA's clunky slide presentation, complete with a snazzy new PRISM logo — which he then posted on SlideShare More about Humor, Prism, Us, Watercooler, and Conversations |
Mysterious Lines on Mars Are Result of Dry Ice Posted: 11 Jun 2013 12:17 PM PDT Images of lines drawn in the sand of Martian dunes have puzzled scientists for years. As it turns out, those linear shapes are the result of dry ice gliding down the slopes. The mile-long troughs on Mars, which scientists first spied in 2002, are unusual because they abruptly end in a pit, unlike similar lines on Earth that end in "debris aprons," as the rolling material is deposited at the bottom
"In debris flows, you have water carrying sediment downhill, and the material eroded from the top is carried to the bottom and deposited as a fan-shaped apron," said Serina Diniega, a NASA planetary scientist. "In the linear gullies, you're not transporting material. You're carving out a groove, pushing material to the sides." Read more... More about Space, Nasa, Science, Mars, and Us World |

One Woman's Struggle to Drive Sales via Pinterest Posted: 11 Jun 2013 11:27 AM PDT Syazrina Ismail's business, JumpSac baby slings, sounds like the perfect type of product for Pinterest. So why is JumpSac's page so far limited to just one entry? Technical issues. Ismail says that because of Java Script, Pinterest isn't displaying the proper images from her website. "It keeps displaying another non-related pic," she says. Ismail is working on a new website using the Magento platform that she hopes will remedy the situation. Ismail started the page in early May, shortly after Mashable's initial Social Makeover story ran. Pinterest activation was a key component of the plan set forth by Katy Lynch, the consultant from our Small Business Panel that we paired Ismail up with. Nevertheless, JumpSac had a good month without Pinterest. The brand boosted its Facebook fans by 800, a roughly 17% increase. Ismail says she was hoping for more than a thousand, but 800 is good. Best of all, sales tripled during the month, an indication that all the social media marketing outreach reaped some dividends Read more...
