Hilarious Video Asks 'What if Dating Was Like Reddit?' Posted: 17 Jun 2013 07:57 PM PDT Many people are avid users of Reddit, but if the conventions of dating had similar quirks and social cues, they'd likely down-vote it to oblivion For its latest video, web series "If Dating Was Like..." looks at how courtship would work if it functioned like the social-sharing site — and the results are spot-on
Obviously, there would be lots of topic-jumping, maybe some trolling, an Internet meme here or there. It's the kind of stuff that works online, but probably not IRL Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian agrees that the video accurately represents the spirit of Reddit. Indeed, he left a comment on YouTube, giving his stamp of approval Read more... More about Reddit, Viral Videos, Videos, Humor, and Watercooler |
Superman Is a Super Advertiser Posted: 17 Jun 2013 07:05 PM PDT When it comes to promotion deals that rake in millions of dollars — 160 million, to be precise — Superman is as super human as ever. The Man of Steel, the subject of the new film that opened on June 14, has over 100 promotion partners, AdAge reports. The Hardee's and Carl's Jr. burger chains have produced an ad for the Super Bacon Cheeseburger that features Henry Cavill, who plays Superman in “Man of Steel,” and is directed by Zack Snyder, the film's director. And from Gillette to Warby Parker to Twizzlers, there has been no stopping advertisers from capitalizing on the man who's faster than a speeding bullet Read more... Incredible Model of 'Friends' Apartment Made Entirely Out of Paper Posted: 17 Jun 2013 06:34 PM PDT It's been nine years since Monica and Chandler Bing packed up and moved out of their oversized apartment in the series finale of Friends (mind-boggling, right?). But take a look at this model by Brazilian artist Bruna Salvador Conforto, and a wave of nostalgia just about knocks you out. The incredibly intricate model, made entirely of paper, took Conforto nearly two years to complete. Some of the items in the apartment were so tiny — like the glasses on the kitchen shelves — that she needed to use tweezers to build them. More impressive yet, this was Conforto's first attempt at a paper model. Read more... More about Tv, Art, Friends, Watercooler, and Pics |
Volvo Tests Electric Road That Charges Cars Posted: 17 Jun 2013 05:52 PM PDT Recent innovations in wireless charging for electric vehicles could mean losing the need for batteries altogether. While modern Teslas work on new wireless recharging, particularly for electric vehicles in urban areas, one Swedish project is testing a system designed to power EVs along the highway. The method, developed by the Volvo Group and the Swedish power company Alstom with support from the Swedish Energy Agency, would involve putting two power lines directly into the road. As vehicles pass over, they’d continuously be supplied with electricity.

Beyonce Goes Online to Congratulate Kanye, Kim on Baby Kimye Posted: 17 Jun 2013 03:47 PM PDT Kanye West and Kim Kardashian's baby girl, born into mystery Saturday morning, has received no name (that we know of). But mini Kimye and her parents have received a lot of attention, including a nod from the Queen Bey. A mother herself, Beyonce took to her website Monday afternoon to fete West and Kardashian with a big congratulatory photo (below), as well as a nice, concise post: "Congratulations Kim & Kanye, enjoy this beautiful moment together."
At time of writing, Beyonce's post had bagged more than 100,000 likes on Facebook. Nothing from Sasha Fierce on Twitter, though. Of course, that didn't stop others: Read more... More about Entertainment, Celebrities, Kanye West, Beyonce, and Jay Z |
7 People Who Think Kimye's Baby Is the Messiah Posted: 17 Jun 2013 03:02 PM PDT Holy Yeezus, it looks like the birth of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's baby girl on Saturday sparked a new pseudo-religion devoted to the already-famous newborn. It's unclear what the scriptures might be, but hopefully it's something written by Aunt Khloe.
Fans, haters and new believers took to Twitter to weigh in on the Kimye baby's entrance into the world. Most agreed she is the Messiah — or Lucifer. 1.More about Twitter, List, Celebrities, Kanye West, and Kim Kardashian |

OpenAirplane: Finally, a Zipcar-Style Service for Airplanes Posted: 17 Jun 2013 02:25 PM PDT Rejoice, oh aeronautical adventurers of American airspace: There's finally a Zipcar-style service for renting small airplanes. OpenAirplane launched Monday at airports in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Jose, Kissimmee and Detroit with the goal of dramatically simplifying aircraft rental.
OpenAirplane members first take a standardized flight exam before they're allowed to borrow an airplane from a variety of airports. Previously, private pilots who don't own their own planes had to do "checkout flights" with every new rental firm before receiving the keys — a time-consuming and expensive process. Read more... Just How Convenient Are Citi Bikes? Posted: 17 Jun 2013 02:20 PM PDT "New York City is the greatest place on earth — but living here is a huge pain in the ass," says filmmaker Casey Neistat in his short documentary And what makes it oh-so-painful? The simple task of getting from Point A to Point B.
Neistat put New York City's new bike sharing program, launched on May 27, to the test. He conducted a study by commuting to work using Citi Bike, taxi and his personal bike, then evaluating each experience by its "pain-in-the-ass factor." The verdict: The Citi Bike isn't such a pain, after all. Actually, Neistat liked it so much he signed up for a yearly membership. Watch the YouTube video above to see why Read more... Star Wars Elevator Prank Freaks Out Students Posted: 17 Jun 2013 01:52 PM PDT It's safe to say that Star Wars is one of the most idolized movie franchises of all time. So when a group used the film as the basis of a prank, it was widely appreciated — by onlookers. During a visit to King's College London, a group called the JesterLads targeted students who attempted to use the elevator. With a hidden camera in place, one of the pranksters stood in the middle of the elevator, pretending to use sheer force to open and close the door

Popular Ad Blocker Also Helps the Ad Industry Posted: 17 Jun 2013 01:32 PM PDT Whenever discussion starts about how to hide from the tracking code that follows users around the web to serve them targeted ads, recommendations soon pile up for a browser add-on called Ghostery. It blocks tracking code, noticeably speeds up how quickly pages load as a result and has roughly 19 million users. Yet few of those who advocate Ghostery as a way to escape the clutches of the online ad industry realize that the company behind it, Evidon, is in fact part of that selfsame industry. Evidon helps companies that want to improve their use of tracking code by selling them data collected from the 8 million Ghostery users who have enabled the tool's data sharing feature. Read more... The New Mac Pro: 4 Things You Didn’t Know Posted: 17 Jun 2013 01:18 PM PDT Apple suffered its share of derision over the unusual shape and design of the new Mac Pro, but the reality is that the workstation's unique look (for a desktop computer, at least) may be a near-perfect example of form following function. The new desktop-ready workhorse computer made its debut at Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference last week. While observers couldn’t stop talking about its Duracell-like frame, it was the specs that truly excited the Apple Mac Pro faithful: a workstation-level Xeon processor (up to 12 cores), ECC memory and six Thunderbolt 2 ports. Those ports can power up to three ultra-high-definition 4K displays, if you can find one for sale. Read more... More about Apple, Wwdc, Mac Pro, Tech, and Dev Design |
If You Love Watching Videos Online, This Is Your Dream Job Posted: 17 Jun 2013 01:05 PM PDT Americans watch upwards of 38 billion videos a month, according to comScore data. On many video-hosting sites, a majority of those videos might feature the Harlem Shake or cats, but on one site in particular, video content tends to be a bit more creative and highly produced. Vimeo is a video-sharing site founded in 2004 by a group of filmmakers who wanted a clean and beautiful platform through which to share their work and preserve personal memories. The site attracted other filmmakers and creative types, and quickly earned a reputation for high-quality content. The site was bought by IAC in 2006, and it became the first video-sharing site to support HD playback, in October 2007. That feature catalyzed growth of the user base, as creative individuals and brands flocked to the site to host their best video content. Vimeo videos aren't preceded by pre-roll or flanked by banner ads; the interface is clean, and the focal point is the video itself. Read more... 20 People Who Just Can't Waterpark Posted: 17 Jun 2013 12:59 PM PDT When things start to heat up outside, there's only one place to go — the waterpark. Those magical places filled with fun rides, where it's perfectly normal to strut around in just your swim suit and flippy-floppies. They are beacons for summer vacationers, that is, only if you can correctly waterpark Many people lack the coordination to gracefully catapult from a slide into the water like the love child of a synchronized swimmer and a swan. India to Send Last Telegram in July Posted: 17 Jun 2013 12:16 PM PDT In 1850, the British inventor William O'Shaughnessy — who would later become famous for his early experiments with medical cannabis — sent a coded message over a telegraph line in India. His telegram would usher in a new age of communication in and for India, connecting the country in a way that had never before been possible. Now, sometime on July 14, someone in India will have a dubious honor: he or she will send the country's last telegram. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, India's state-run telecom company, will shutter its telegram service — bringing the long era of Indian telegraphy from a dash to a full stop. Read more... Radio Host Apologizes for Mocking Steve Gleason's ALS Battle Posted: 17 Jun 2013 12:13 PM PDT Ex-NFL player Steve Gleason has become a powerful force of inspiration while publicly fighting the disease ALS. But that didn't stop a sports talk radio show from taking some cheap shots at his condition on Monday morning The tasteless attempts at humor quickly had one host backpedaling on Twitter and drew an unspecified number of indefinite suspensions by the station Gleason (pictured above) was a defensive back for the New Orleans Saints in the mid-2000s and produced one of the most iconic plays in franchise history. For a city struggling to bounce back from disaster, he became a symbol of hope and renewal. That's only intensified in recent years as Gleason has used the Internet and social media to rally support for ALS research while he battles the crippling nerve condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. We covered his story in-depth this February: Read more... More about Nfl, Entertainment, and Sports |
Aaliyah Comes Back to Life in Chris Brown's 'Don't Think They Know' Posted: 17 Jun 2013 11:58 AM PDT In his new "Don't Think They Know" music video, R&B crooner Chris Brown resurrects a familiar face in digital form. The late singer Aaliyah, who died in 2001 in a airplane crash, appears several times as a projection beside a dancing Brown. Aaliyah's appearance, which is reminiscent of the 2012 Coachella music festival performance in which the deceased Tupac Shakur performed as a life-sized hologram, marks yet another instance in which her vocals and now her figure have been used posthumously
The "Don't Think They Know" video tells the story of rival gangs setting aside their differences. The digital Aaliyah first appears briefly at the 2:28 mark before re-emerging a few more times. The song is from Brown's upcoming X album, which comes out July 16. Read more... More about Music, Entertainment, Chris Brown, and Aaliyah |
Fail Fast: How 5 Startups Got a Second Chance Posted: 17 Jun 2013 11:33 AM PDT "Pivot" is often viewed as a dirty word in the startup world, with the assumption being that the founders failed in some way. But sometimes failing — or at least acknowledging you're on the wrong course — is the best path toward success. While founders at some companies like Evernote have prided themselves on staying 100% true to their original vision, many other well-known startups chose to overhaul or outright abandon their original idea early on, in favor of a different business strategy Here's a look at some of the predecessors to today's hottest startups, several of which are now valued in the billions of dollars: Read more... U.S. Open Golfer Sinks Miraculous Hole-in-One Posted: 17 Jun 2013 11:11 AM PDT You don't always see someone hit a hole-in-one at one of the world's biggest golf tournaments. But even when you do, it's never this ridiculous PGA Tour rookie Shawn Stefani had one of the most incredible aces you'll ever see on Sunday during the U.S. Open at Pennsylvania's Merion Golf Club
What makes his shot so amazing? As you'll see in the video above, the ball doesn't even land on the green originally, instead hitting the rough, taking a fortuitous reverse-bounce and then rolling some 50 feet into the cup. It's the first U.S Open hole-in-one ever at Merion. It, of course, also made Stefani a viral sports hit online Read more... More about Golf, Entertainment, Videos, and Sports |
'Arkham Origins' Pits Young Batman Against New Foes Posted: 17 Jun 2013 10:57 AM PDT Warner Bros. Interactive pulled back the mask on Batman: Arkham Origins at E3, giving fans more insight into Batman's budding crime-fighting days. Batman: Arkham Origins is set on Christmas Eve, early in the Dark Knight's career, when he encounters the Black Mask, a villain younger fans of the franchise might be less familiar with. The Black Mask has invited 12 assassins to Gotham to kill Batman for a juicy reward, and other popular villains like the Joker have also come for a piece. This title builds on the foundation of the other Arkham titles — Arkham Asylum and Arkham City — in which Batman uses a host of gadgets and skills to sneak by or fight through enemies. The title is with a new studio this time, Warner Brothers Games Montreal, but it still has the hallmarks of the franchise. Read more... More about Entertainment, Gaming, Batman, and E3 2013 |
Facebook Claims Mobile Ads Cost More Than Desktop Ads Posted: 17 Jun 2013 10:45 AM PDT CANNES, FRANCE — Bucking an industry trend, the price tag on Facebook's mobile ads are higher than those for its desktop ads, according to Carolyn Everson, Facebook's VP of global marketing solutions. Everson says CMPs — the prices for ads to reach 1,000 customers — are higher on mobile than on desktop, though she declined to specify the difference. The higher costs for mobile may reflect the fact that right-hand column direct-response Marketplace ads that appear on Facebook desktop don't run on mobile. CPMs on mobile overall are $0.75 compared with $3.50 for desktop, according to a presentation from Wall Street analyst Mary Meeker in 2012. Read more... 7 Gadgets for the Ultimate Connected Living Room Posted: 17 Jun 2013 10:40 AM PDT Stop me if you've heard this one before: The living room is about to become totally connected. For the past decade or longer, users were promised a world where live TV, digital video from Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, and purchased or downloaded content would all be available from one interface using one remote. A decade later, we've failed to reach that apex of what remains the true holy grail for the connected living room, but we're getting closer than ever. Even five years ago, the idea that it would be normal to have a wireless set-top box connected to a television set seemed far-fetched. Today, it's hard to imagine a world without having access to Netflix on your big screen. Read more... More about Business Plans, Roku, Xbox 360, Apple Tv, and Ipad |
