Rare 'Sea Serpent' Caught on Video Posted: 10 Jun 2013 08:58 PM PDT The giant oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world, measuring — according to some reports — about 56 feet from tip to tail, although recorded lengths are somewhat more modest. Its size and its snake-like shape suggest that it may have been the source of at least some legends of sea serpents In Europe, it has been called the "king of herrings," perhaps because it would sometimes be sighted near herring shoals, which some fishermen believed it guided. In Japan, the coincident appearances of oarfish that have been washed ashore before earthquakes and tsunamis have led to the fish being regarded as a bad omen. Read more... PS4 Will Support Used Games, Doesn't Require Constant Connection Posted: 10 Jun 2013 08:12 PM PDT Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 will not place any restrictions on used games, and won't require a constant connection A direct challenge to the policies of Microsoft's Xbox One, the announcement was made during Sony's E3 presentation to thunderous applause. Company CEO Jack Trenton said Sony wanted gamers to do whatever they wanted with their game discs after they purchased them. "Gamers should be free to trade in their games, sell them or loan them to friends," he said. "We want to support the retail models already in place." Trenton also announced that the PS4 would not need a constant Internet connection to play single-player games. Read more... More about Gaming, Sony, Playstation 4, Entertainment, and Used Games |

Tim Berners-Lee: NSA Surveillance an 'Intrusion on Basic Human Rights' Posted: 10 Jun 2013 07:43 PM PDT Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web, has expressed his concern over the the recently revealed secret NSA surveillance systems. "Unwarranted government surveillance is an intrusion on basic human rights that threatens the very foundations of a democratic society," Berners-Lee told the Financial Times. The Internet guru also argued that these type of government intrusion threaten "the very foundations of a democratic society."
Berners-Lee's words came just one day after The Guardian revealed Edward Snowden as the source of last week's major leaks. Snowden opened a pandora's box of surveillance, from a court order that compelled Verizon Business to turn over all telephone records to the government, to an Internet communications snooping system called PRISM Read more... The State of Apple 2013: Quiet, Thoughtful And Serious Posted: 10 Jun 2013 07:14 PM PDT What a difference a year makes At WWDC 2012, Apple CEO Tim Cook's keynote opened with a comedian. Her name was Siri. She warmed up the crowd with jokes about Samsung's new fridge, and speculation that the new flavors of Android OS were being dreamed up by Ben and Jerry's. It went on to feature the up-and-coming executive Scott Forstall loudly proclaiming how fantastic his new iOS 6 app — Apple Maps — was going to be. The WWDC 2013 Cook keynote couldn't have been more different. It opened with a video devoted to Apple's design principles "Designing something requires focus," it read over a quiet piano soundtrack. "It takes time. There are a thousand 'no's for every 'yes.'" Read more... More about Apple, Tim Cook, Tech, Apps Software, and Wwdc 2013 |

The New England Patriots, however, seem to have ended that debate for now after reports that they'll sign Tebow to a contract this week. That set off a mini-hysteria on Twitter after the news hit Monday afternoon More about Nfl, Entertainment, and Sports |

iOS 7: Closer to the Perfect Mobile OS Posted: 10 Jun 2013 04:27 PM PDT There is, I believe, a perfect mobile operating system, one ideal way of handling mobile activities on a smartphone or tablet. Apple, Google and Microsoft, maybe even Blackberry, are all headed to this common destination But on Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco, Apple proved that it’s the furthest down that road. And that should surprise no one. iOS 7, the most radical reimagining of iOS since its inception in 2007, was met with cheers of approval and, in some spots in the cavernous Moscone hall, standing ovations. From where I sat, it was deserved. We all knew this was coming: A flattening of the interface: Less overt polish and skeuomorphism, a new look and feel brought to you by the architect of Apple aesthetic, Jony Ive. Personally, I was worried. Apple’s iPhone interface remains my favorite among smartphone platforms. I didn’t see enough wrong with it to require a rethink, but then I probably wasn’t thinking deeply enough about the mobile OS. Read more... More about Iphone, Apple, Ios, Tech, and Mobile |
Why Insiders, Not Hackers, Are Biggest Threat to Cybersecurity Posted: 10 Jun 2013 03:55 PM PDT The NSA leaks perpetrated by Edward Snowden will easily go down as one of the biggest revelations of the year, if not the decade. But the episode also raises new questions about the risk that insiders pose to government and corporate cybersecurity, in spite of the attention lavished on foreign hackers. Snowden's case is unique in that it uncovered a previously unknown surveillance apparatus that's massive in size and scope. It's not unique, however, in the way the whistleblower did his deed. Two-thirds of all reported data breaches involve internal actors wittingly or unwittingly bringing sensitive information to outsiders, according to industry analysts. Read more... Edward Snowden's Motivation: Internet Freedom Posted: 10 Jun 2013 02:47 PM PDT "Governments of the Industrial World, you weary giants of flesh and steel, I come from Cyberspace, the new home of Mind. On behalf of the future, I ask you of the past to leave us alone. You are not welcome among us. You have no sovereignty where we gather." Those are the words that open the Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace, a seminal paper by John Perry Barlow. In the paper, the former Grateful Dead lyricist and founder of the online rights advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation argued governments should never meddle with cyberspace, a separate place where the real-world rules had no reason to exist.
